O.P. Singh, IPS Director General

  • Shri O.P. Singh is an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, National Defence College and Delhi University and holds a Master Degree in Political Science, MBA in Disaster Management and an M.Phil degree from Madras University. He joined Indian Police Service in 1983.
  • Shri Singh has held several positions of responsibility in UP and Govt. of India addressing issues of internal security, crime investigation, law & order, intelligence and managing mega events like Kumbh Mela at Allahabad. In all his key roles, he inspired police personnel to perform at high performance levels, energized teams of services-oriented standards and facilitated organizational resources to take on improvement initiatives relating to professional excellence. As Chief of Police at Lakhimpur Kheri, a terai district bordering Nepal, he developed key competency of turnaround strategies to deal terrorism and successfully stamped out terrorist activities in 1992-93. As Chief of Police at Lucknow, he displayed excellent negotiation skills in settlement of long-standing Shia-Sunni disputes over religious processions for which he was honoured by UP Govt in 1998.
  • As Director General of National Disaster Response Force, he handled successfully major disasters like J&K Floods, Nepal Earthquake, Cyclone Hudhud and Chennai Urban floods and meticulously galvanized his response teams to carry out rescue operations saving lives of thousands of distressed and marooned victims. In Nepal Earthquake (2015), in which Shri Singh personally coordinated, oversaw and fast-tracked rescue and relief operations, the role of NDRF was highly applauded by Govt. of Nepal and United Nations at global level. As an acknowledgement of his efforts to lead from the front in such disaster responses, IIT Delhi published a case study on his leadership and managing change at NDRF in 2016. In CISF, a multi-skilled tech saavy Force, he introduced several innovative measures in aviation security leading to seamless experiences at major airports of the country. During his tenure, CISF became the first Central Armed Police Force to get Quality Excellence Award (2017) for Best Airport Security at World Quality Congress.
  • Associated with various professional bodies, Shri Singh has contributed articles in national dailies and magazines and has authored a book on Nepal Earthquake. His other interests include developing others, working at a social cause and cycling.
  • He has been awarded with Indian Police Medal for Gallantry, Indian Police Medal for Distinguished Services and Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Services. While working in NDRF, he was given Distinguished Leadership Award for Disaster Resilience. He was also conferred with “Exceptional Contribution Award-2016” for successfully leading the disaster relief operations during unprecedented floods in J&K (2014) and Chennai (2015) and earthquake in Nepal (2015) besides revamping security apparatus of major airports in the country.
